Welcome to Year Six

Hello and welcome to Year 6. A very busy, exciting and rewarding year, I am very much looking forwarding to supporting your child in their final year at St Paul’s.

Teachers in Year 6 

Apart from myself, Mrs Forsyth will teach the class on a Thursday afternoon when I will be having my planning and preparation non-contact time, she will also support the class throughout the week. Mrs Forsyth has many years of experience in Year 6. We are fortunate to also have Miss Azhir and Mrs Hollowood supporting children in Year 6 this year 

I expect each child to read for at least one session every day and they each have a reading record and book they can bring home daily. Reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts is encouraged as is a range of classical and modern authors. Talking and questioning your child about what they have read helps develop comprehension skills, particularly inference, so the children gain a greater depth and understanding. ‘Why do you think…?’ questions are a good starting point. Using a dictionary and thesaurus is another important skill for your child to develop as it helps expand their understanding and vocabulary range. I ask you to encourage your child to read each day and talk to them about their book. Could you also please date and sign the reading record when they have read. If your child is a reluctant reader then comics, magazines or information leaflets might spark their interest! Reading an interactive ebook on a tablet is another option. Chidren also have the Reading Plus program this year. They will be expected to complete 5 Reading Plus sessions each week. 

Reading Books can be changed in school throughout the week, there is a tray in class for children to place the books they are ready to change. 

Weekly Rewards

After our visit to Robinwood,  we will have our usual weekly celebration assembly at 2.30pm, where we will recognise and celebrate children’s achievements in and out of class. In addition to star of the week and good work,children are also able to share any out of school award during this time. After Good Work, in class I will also recognise Reading Plus achievements and Class Dojo rewards.

General reminders

PE this half term is every Thursday and Friday and I ask that the correct kit is in school for these lessons. An appropriate outdoor kit may also be required depending on the weather. Please check the half-termly newsletters for more information as to when this will be required.  Children will also receive weekly English and Maths homework, either web based (passwords are in the homework diary book) or through workbooks and projects.

I am encouraging the children to be independent learners, therefore it is expected that children take responsibility for getting their homework in on time and organising their time efficiently.

Year 6 Responsibilities 

Year 6 have the privilege of taking on many responsibilities in school. Your child may be a hall monitor ( responsible for setting up the hall ready for worship). They may be on door duty at break or lunch times. In pairs, they could be assigned to a particular class to assist that teacher on a Friday lunchtime. They may be responsible for counting and collating the merits in school. All of these tasks are on a rota basis and the roles will be changed each half-term so that everyone has the opportunity to carry out the various responsibilities. All children are assigned job roles in class.
