Hello and welcome to Year 3. I am really looking forward to working with you and your child to have an enjoyable and productive year. The children are now in the Juniors which is extra exciting for them! I will upload a curriculum newsletter at the beginning of each half term to inform you of the children's learning. Every week I also send a note about homework home on a Friday and upload a short class newsletter to the website to let you know about upcoming events.
The only teacher will be myself, Mrs Hayward. However, Mrs McLean will cover my PPA time and teach the class on a Tuesday afternoon. We are very lucky to have a team of dedicated and caring teaching assistants to help support the children throughout the week. Please don't hesitate to come and see me if you have any questions or queries.
Books will be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. When your child completes their book please remind them to put it into the 'Reading Books to be Changed' tray first thing in the morning. During Year Three children will continue to develop their confidence with reading and will be reading books with longer text and more complex sentence structures. By the end of the year they may be an independent reader. I will assign your child to a book band which I feel fits their current level of reading, they may however read books from home or from the library also. You can support your child by encouraging them to read daily and asking them questions about their reading e.g. about the characters, plot, predictions for the remainder of the book. Please write a comment about their reading and sign their reading record.
Each Friday one child will be chosen to be our ‘Star of the Week’ and three children will be invited to be in Good Work which takes place on a Friday at 2:30pm in the school hall. I will let the children know who is in Good Work on a Thursday and will also send a text message to confirm this.
This term the children will have P.E on Wednesdays and Thursdays. They must have their P.E kit in school with P.E pumps included. They may in the colder months bring tracksuit pants, jumpers and trainers for outdoor P.E. please ensure that your child does not wear earrings on these days as they will not be able to do P.E if they cannot remove them.
Any letters or reply slips, which need to be returned, can be put in your child’s book bag. The children are expected to check them each morning and give things in before the morning register.
The children will have a weekly spelling test. Children will be given spellings to learn on a Friday to take home and will be tested the following week. Mental maths tests will focus on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Junior children also have a times tables practice book, on occasion I will set specific tables to learn but this resource can be used freely to develop their confidence with multiplication tables.
Homework is given out every Friday and must be returned by the following Wednesday. I will begin to set 'My Maths' homework every week and will keep a record of completion. I will also set literacy homework and some project based topic homework.
During the first few days of Autumn term, we devised a list of special rules as a class. The children all agreed that by following these rules, we would create a happy classroom.
Be the best you can be.
