Welcome to Year 1

Teachers in Year 1

Miss Berryman teaches Year 1 throughout the week. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs Quinn teaches the class R.E. Miss Cuthbertson supports Miss Berryman in class on most days throughout the week. Year 1 is also supported by Mrs McLaughlin on a Friday afternoon.

Reading in Year 1

The children will bring their reading books home daily. Please support them at home with their reading and record the pages they have read. Reading books will be changed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure your child has their reading book in school on these days. The children will read in class in guided group sessions. Some children are supported to read 1:1 by peers, Year 5 reading buddies, voluntary helpers, teaching assistants and the class teacher.

Star of the week

Each Friday we have a celebration worship at 2:30 pm. Two children are chosen from each class to show work they have produced during that week. Also children are awarded certificates for achievements in multiplication tables. One child is selected as star of the week for general improvement or demonstrating particularly positive qualities. If your child has been selected you will recieve a text message and are welcome to attend the celebration worship.

General Reminders and the weekly routine

P.E is on Monday and Thursday. Your child will need a school P.E kit to take part in the lesson. They should remove jewelry before coming to school on that day. Girls need to have long hair tied back. Please ensure P.E kit is labelled in a named bag.

Spellings are tested on Friday. Spellings will be sent home on Friday to be learned and tested on the following Friday. Give your child plenty of opportunities to practise them throughout the week by writing them out and checking them over. Please ensure their spelling book is in school every Friday.

It is important that your child makes good study habits so aswell as regular reading and spelling practise, homework will be sent home each week on Friday and is to be returned on Wednesday. The homework tasks are in Maths, English or topic works. They will suport the learning that has taken place in class. Some tasks will be taken online using online homework sites.
