Welcome to Year 4

Welcome to year 4. We really hope that your child enjoys being in this year. As this is the second year of key stage 2 the level of work will steadily increase. Each half term we will upload a curriculum letter which outlines each subject in more deatail and a cirriculum jigsaw. We hope you find these informative to help support your child with their learning.

Teachers in year 4.

There are two teachers in year 4. Miss Walmsley and Mrs Quinton. Miss Walmsley will teach the first half of the week, Monday to Wednesday morning and Mrs Quinton will teach the latter part of the week, Wednesday afternoon through to Friday. Mrs Gibson will take the year 4 children swimming each Monday morning and cover the class on alternate Wednesday afternoons, to cover planning, preperation and assesssment time.

Reading in year 4.

Children in year 4 are still encouraged to read regularly at home. More confident readers should be reading daily with adult support to ask questions about what they have read. Less confidenet readers should still be reading aloud daily to an adult. It is really helpful for the children to discuss what they are reading, to aid understanding and comprehension. In addition, children should become familiar with using a dictionary to investigate the meaning of tricky or unfamiliar words. Children are able to change books whenever they are ready. It is really helpful if you could sign your child's reading record when their book is completed. It is also helpful to know what other reading material the children enjoy. Therefore, other books, magazines and comics can also be added to the diary.

Star of the week.

Each Friday one child will be chosen to be star of the week. Two children will be invited to share their work during good work assembly. This takes place on Friday at 2.30 p.m. and parents and relatives will be welcome to join us. Parents of star pupils and good work will be notified by text.

General reminders.

As part of the P.E curriculum, children in year 4 will go swimming each Monday morning. On this day children require a swimming costume, towel, hat and a locker token/pound. Children will also participate in another P.E session which is generally Tuesday afternoon. Therefore please ensure that P.E kits are in school and that children don't wear earings.

Children will be provided with spellings each Friday and tested on these the following Friday. Please help your child to learn these spellings and once again become familiar with using a dictionary to investigate unfamiliar words.

Children will recieve talk homework each Tuesday, this is to prepare them for 'The Big Write' the following day. It is really beneficial for your child, to spend a little time discussing their ideas with you. English and maths homework will also be provided. This will generally be given on a Friday to be completed by the following Wednesday. Some of the English and maths homework will be set using SPAG.com and MyMaths.co.uk. Usernames and passwords are in the children's homework diaries. If you encounter any problems logging on to either website do not hesitate to let us know. Please could you sign your child's homework diary weekly. This is a way of communicating any issues with homework that your child may experience.

If you have any other queries please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.
