Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to Year 5's class page. On this page you will find general information, updates about what we have been up to in class throughout the year and the relevant curriculum jigsaws and newsletters as we progress through the year.

Teachers in Year 5

In addition to myself, Mrs Bowie and Mrs McLaughlin will be our teaching assistants. Mrs McLean will teach the children on a Wednesday afternoon to cover my non-contact time.

Reading

The children have all been given a reading book and record to bring home and return to school each day. It is expected that once they have finished their reading book, they are to inform an adult and change their reading book for another one. Please ensure that their reading record is dated and signed with any relevant comments. I am happy for children to also record any books which they enjoy at home in their reading record.

Star of the week

Each Friday one child will be chosen to be our 'Star of the Week', there are also awards for 'Champion Speller', 'Most Improved Speller' and 2 children will be invited to show their work in 'Good Work'. If your child has been chosen for any of these achievements, we will contact you. The good work worship takes place on a Friday at 2:30pm in the school hall.

Music

Our class is learning to play the African drums this year, taught by Mr Fitton. Each child has been loaned their instrument which they will keep in school, ready for their lesson on a Wednesday morning.

General Reminders

PE this half term is every Thursday and Friday, please ensure that PE kits are in school on these days.

The children have a weekly spelling test on a Friday morning. Children will be given a set of spellings to learn in their orange spelling book. Spellings are to be taken home, learnt and then tested the following Friday.

Homework is given out on a Friday and is expected to be handed in the following Wednesday. Maths homework is online through the 'MyMaths' website, this is monitored and recorded by the class teacher. English homework will either be linked to topic work, research or writing objectives. We use a website called SPAG.com, which may be used for English homework also. All children have their logins for these websites stuck into their homework diaries.
